A CRAZY TOUR STORY THAT’S HAPPENED TO YOU? 
This one wasn’t on tour but actually happened while I was recording an album in Cleveland back in 2009. We were recording an album in the old Chimaira studio, and downstairs were some hip-hop/rap studios that had quite a bit of traffic coming in and out pretty much 24 hours a day.
At the time I was a smoker, so I would step out occasionally to the parking lot to burn one. One evening a pimped out Bentley pulled into the parking lot, and sure as shit, sitting in the back with his Crunk Juice and girls on each side, was Lil Jon. His bodyguard stepped out and asked me for a smoke, and slipped me a crisp $20 in a way that was alarmingly smooth. I’m not sure how long they stayed, or if they were working on an album or just visiting the studio, but I obviously had to run back upstairs and let the guys know what just happened. Plus when you’re a broke 20 something, $20 for one smoke is sort of a big deal.
WHAT WAS THE BEST SHOW YOU’VE EVER PLAYED? 
Personally I would have to say doing direct support for Devin Townsend while he was on tour in the Midwest. I was dealing with some mental health issues in my early 20’s, and Devin Townsend was essentially the soundtrack of some of my most formative years, specifically Ocean Machine and Alien. His music was cathartic in a way that proved to be hugely beneficial for me in terms of coping with my own internal struggles, but also relating to someone who had been through some similar experiences. The chance to share the stage with him and hang out with him after the show was truly one of the most rewarding shows I’ve ever played. Not only that, he’s as warm and genuine as you would think he is. One of the most prolific musicians of our generation, and forever humble and gracious to everyone he meets.
NAME ONE SKETCHY THING YOU’VE DONE BEFORE?
I was dangerously close to starting an entire island on fire in the late ’90s. I won’t go into details on how or where it was, but it could have been an absolutely catastrophic event had it not been contained.
IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE…..MARIJUANA OR ALCOHOL AND WHY?
Both can be incredibly fun, but If I had to pick only one, I think it’d be marijuana. One thing I’ve noticed, specifically while playing drums, is drinking while playing drums reduces your inhibitions significantly, but at a large cost. You focus more on what you’re doing more than what the band is doing, and lends itself to tempo fluctuations and general inability to recognize nuance and dynamics in a performance.
Marijuana on the other hand has the ability to almost slow down time, and really tunes you into everyone that’s going on around you. You feel the music enhanced in a way that resonates deeply, and things you’re doing that normally present a significant challenge musically suddenly become way easier than you ever thought they were. I think the sensitivity it brings probably isn’t for everyone, especially if you’re prone to anxiety. But for a live performance, the perfect amount really amplifies the experience and strengthens the bond between yourself, the other guys in the band, and the music in general.
DO YOU THINK CONCERTS SHOULD BE ALLOWED ANYTIME SOON?
I’m on the fence on this one. It’s probably not a good idea right now, honestly. For bands and artists that rely on live shows for their livelihood, I feel for them. It’s tragic. But until the pandemic is more under control and we drive down the significance of illness to the point where it’s as mild or serious as the normal flu, it’s probably best that we all take some time to hunker down and just be smart about it. Even though the concert crowds typically lean towards younger crowds that are more likely to not have terrible disease outcomes, we all have family and friends that might not have that same outcome. Out of sheer respect for humanity, taking time off from shows is the responsible thing to do, even though it sucks terribly.
They’ll be back eventually, but the challenge presented has also driven some really unique ideas in an industry that has been casually riding the wave of momentum for decades now. Innovation in streaming ideas have been popping up and might lend itself to up and coming bands being able to utilize these tools to reach large audiences without having to quit jobs, live in a van, and likely put themselves in insurmountable debt that could probably be avoided. This downtime is equipping performers with more robust tools to add to the arsenal, and in the end, is probably a good thing.
