Korn‘s drummer, Ray Luzier, has been maintaining the beat for the nu-metal pioneers since 2007, and in a latest interview with Modern Drummer‘s David Frangioni, he mirrored on a few of his favourite recollections with the band, from crafting chart-topping hits to diving headfirst into dubstep experiments.
“I like doing a brand new document and I like touring to help that… Now that I am part of the band, writing with them, being on a document, after which going out and taking part in these songs stay. I like the classics.”
Whereas Korn thrives on a collaborating inventive method, Luzier remembered occasional solo gems: “Generally Jon will usher in a completed thought — there is a tune, ‘By no means By no means’, off of The Paradigm Shift‘ that was an excellent single for us. It went to No. 1. And that was fully Jonathan.”
“He introduced us a tune that he wrote, composed all of it. And we have been, like, ‘Wow, that is catchy. What will we do?’ He mentioned ‘Do no matter you need.’ The drum programming that he placed on there was quite simple. And I ended up doing a really simplistic half as a result of I did not wanna squash the tune. It was such a fantastically melodic tune. So there’s stuff like that that he introduced in,” Luzier recalled.
However Korn is not afraid to push boundaries. Luzier remembered the dubstep detour of The Path Of Totality, a daring transfer that divided followers but in addition attracted new ones.
“We went full-blown dubstep in 2012 on The Path Of Totality, and Skrillex and twelfth Planet and all these dubstep DJs have been part of our existence. And that was an entire left flip. It made some individuals offended and it additionally gained some new followers that loved that model of music.”
Experimentation is a Korn hallmark, evident of their numerous discography. Luzier praised The Serenity Of Struggling and The Nothing for his or her distinctive flavors and lauded the latest Requiem album for its old-school, jam-room vibe. Witnessing these numerous “roots develop into the tune” and resonate with followers is what really excites him.
“That is one factor I like about this band. We’re not afraid to experiment and take a look at new issues. However going from The Paradigm Shift to The Serenity Of Struggling, which is one among my favourite data. The Nothing can also be one among my favorites. And the final one Requiem, we went form of old style, partly analog, went again to simply, like, ‘Let’s get in a room and jam,’ that form of vibe. And that a few of the greatest moments for me, is watching these roots develop into the tune. It turns into one thing that appeals to the crowds. They’re singing the phrases again. There isn’t any higher feeling, than rockin’ out on stage, whether or not it is 500 or 50,000 individuals, feeling that vitality. You’ll be able to by no means, ever change a stay expertise.”
