Slipknot percussionist Shawn “Clown” Crahan recently clarified that he, bassist Paul Grey, and vocalist Anders Colsefni are the unique three founding members of the band. Now in an interview with Fishman Music, Slipknot guitarist Mick Thomson breaks down how the band truly got here to be.
Thomson mentioned he, Grey, and Colsefni had been in a dying steel band known as Physique Pit. That band ultimately recruited Crahan, who began jamming early Slipknot stuff with Grey and Colsefni., That trio ultimately recruited the late and nice Joey Jordison, who introduced alongside guitarist Josh Brainard and sampler Craig Jones. The remainder is historical past, and right here we’re many years later nonetheless listening to and speaking in regards to the band!
“Earlier than Slipknot, Paul, and Andy and I — Andy was our authentic singer of Slipknot — had been in a band known as Physique Pit, a dying steel band. And so they simply misplaced their drummer. They acquired me within the band, and the drummer and different guitar participant left, so we had been searching for a drummer. So we had been writing songs — me, Paul and Donnie [Steele, former Slipknot guitarist and bassist], we had been engaged on stuff, and I truly acquired some issues on a four-track that by no means actually ended up going wherever. However we might written them.
“So we had been doing that stuff, and we had been searching for a drummer. Nicely, on the identical time, our gear is there the place we had been practising, which was our singer’s home, Andy. So, Clown would come over. He knew Andy. Clown comes over and begins taking part in with Paul and Andy, jamming stuff within the basement on the Physique Pit stuff, actually — it was the place Physique Pit practiced. We did not have a drummer, so there was some down time once they began doing that stuff.
“After which that is sort of how that began. Paul and Andy had been doing it with Clown. I did not know Clown, actually; I might met him earlier than. And Paul and Andy and I had been on this factor. So it was them simply dicking round with a good friend of theirs. It was separate; [they were doing] completely different music. After which we by no means actually… How are we gonna discover a technical dying steel drummer in Des Moines? Joey. However Joey did not wanna do it. However Joey did wanna do the Slipknot stuff with Andy and Paul and Clown. So, that is sort of how that went. Our band died.
“See, Joey was in a band with our different guitar participant on the primary document, Josh, and Craig, who did our sampling stuff. They had been each the guitar gamers in Joey’s band. So it is sort of such as you took me, Paul, Andy, Joey, Josh and Craig, and threw these bands collectively after which added Clown. Clown was sort of the — he was the pivotal factor on that, as a result of mainly you had two bands that kind of broke up round him, and reformed round that concept.
“So I assume, in a method, it is like two completely different bands kind of dissolved and became the opposite factor. We by no means actually checked out it like that, as a result of simply the chronology and the best way it occurred and it wasn’t the intent. What’s humorous, although, is we went round and broke up one other band — we broke up Corey‘s band [Stone Sour] by stealing him. After which we ultimately wanted one other guitar participant, so we acquired Jim [Root] from Corey‘s band to return in. So, yeah, it was a really incestuous sort of factor. We mainly simply went round and screwed up individuals’s bands and shit.”
